As a practical civil engineer, I know that calculating steel weight accurately is essential for cost estimation, procurement, and structural design. Under-estimating leads to project delays; over-estimating wastes budget.
This steel weight calculator helps you determine the exact weight of rebar, flat bars, square bars, round bars, angle irons, channels, I-beams, and hollow pipes. Whether you're a site engineer, quantity surveyor, or contractor, this tool will save you time and improve accuracy.
Simply select your bar type, enter dimensions, add multiple pieces, and click "Calculate Weight". The tool instantly gives you total weight in kg and tons, plus estimated cost.
The calculator uses the following formulas based on standard engineering practice:
All calculations use steel density of 7,850 kg/mΒ³ (adjustable for other materials) and are based on real-world site experience.
Unit Weight (kg/m) = DΒ² Γ· 162.28, where D is the diameter in millimetres. For example, a 12mm rebar weighs 12Β² Γ· 162.28 = 0.888 kg/m.
A 12m bar of 12mm rebar weighs approximately 10.66 kg (0.888 kg/m Γ 12m).
The standard density of mild steel is 7,850 kg/mΒ³. This calculator allows you to adjust for stainless steel, aluminium, copper, or custom materials.
Each shape has a specific formula based on its cross-sectional area. This calculator applies the correct formula automatically when you select the shape.
Construction projects typically use multiple rebar sizes or different steel shapes. Adding rows allows you to calculate total weight for your entire steel order.
This Steel Weight Calculator is based on standard engineering formulas and practical on-site experience. It is designed to help engineers, contractors, and students quickly estimate steel quantities for their projects.
